The Certificate of English Language Competency.

The CELC, otherwise known as the Certificate of English Language Competency, is the B2 (CEFR) level language certification offered by the English Language Center of Michigan State University.

Michigan State University’s English Language Center was founded in 1961 and is part of a university that educates over 45,000 students representing more than 130 countries from around the world.

The CELC has been widely piloted and is recognized by ASEP, the hiring apparatus for the public sector in Greece. The exam is also currently available in China, Bahrain, Vietnam and, if I’m not mistaken, Saudi Arabia.

So what, exactly, is the CELC exam like?

We’ll get to that in just a minute. According to University representatives, the test has been designed to be ‘user friendly’ which means that the application process and publication of results will be faster and easier than other exams already in the market. I’m sure many people hear the words ‘user friendly’ and think ‘easy’ which simply isn’t the case.

In order to be recognized at the B2 level of the language, the exam and corresponding certificate have to meet and pass certain criteria… which, of course, the exam does.
