… using these simple techniques. They will help your cause and effect essay writing immensely.
First, distinguish between the cause and effect. To determine causes ask, “Why did this happen?”
To identify effects ask, “What happened because of this?”
The following example shows one cause producing one effect.
Cause
You are very ill.
Effect
You can’t go to school.
This, of course, is extremely simplified as most situations are more complicated. But cause and effect essay writing techniques remain the same.
The following is an example of what could be termed a chain reaction. In other words, there’s more than one cause producing the effect as is most often the case.
Example:
You ate a whole bag of cookies and drank three sodas. You didn’t go to school because you had a stomach ache. You missed the physics “pop” quiz and failed the semester.
After you have identified the main causes and effects proceed in the following manner.
Develop your thesis. – State what you will be discussing. Is it causes, effects, or both? Introduce your main idea with regards to both the cause and effect.
Support your thesis. – Back up your thesis with details that are both relevant and sufficient to support your thesis. Use one of the following manners to organize your support.
- Order of importance. Details arranged from least to most important or vice versa.
- Chronological. Details arranged in the order they occur.
- Categorical. Details arranged by part or category with relevance to the thesis statement.
Use appropriate transition language. – Details and support flow more readily with the following transitional language.
For causes use words or phrases like:
because, due to, one cause is, another is, since, for, first, second, in one respect, that is due to
For effects use words or phrases like:
consequently, as a result, thus, resulted in, one result is, another is, therefore, what’s more, moreover
Limit your statements. – Use language that keeps you factual and professional. The following, or something similar, should be employed.
“It would appear that the cause was” or “It’s likely that” or “Evidence indicates” or “Evidence suggests the likelihood of” or “Based on available evidence.”
