Writing is NOT theory.
Oh sure, you can find out how to write an English essay from a book, you know, just by reading.
But then, when it comes time for you to actually write the essay you will most likely have a few problems, right?
Right.
Having a few problems, though, is a good thing. I’m of the belief that most people learn by making mistakes. How about you?
So when it comes to the question of how to write an English essay, the first thing you have to do is… write it.
That’s it.
Write it.
Then have someone qualified (not just a book reader but someone who can and has actually written essays in the English language) correct it.
That’s it.
Have someone (a qualified someone) correct it.
After the person corrects it, look over the corrections and make notes about what to avoid on the next essay. This is an area where students often “blow it.”
Why?
… Because many don’t even look at their corrected essays!
What a waste. As someone who has now graded thousands of essays over the years, I can assure you that this is a HUGE mistake.
If there is one area where students can really improve their writing, it’s got to be in the planning stage of their essays. I know, I know, I can hear you now, “but there’s not enough time to make a plan.”
So now we get to the real question you should be asking.
Instead of asking how to write an English essay, you would be much better served by asking how to plan an English essay.
You see, if you plan well enough the essay practically writes itself. We’ll talk more about this subject in the following essay pages. You can reach them by clicking on the links above.
